New construction can be anything you want it to be but make sure you can live with the design you have selected, whether modern, traditional, rustic, etc. There is a style for everyone but the real thing may not look like the photos you have reviewed. It might be a good idea to visit open houses so you know you will love the design you selected.
Remodels, on the other hand, should tie into the remainder of the house unless your plan is to remodel the entire structure. Remodels are your chance to make the interior flow and utilize all available space including eliminating dated interiors. If the remodel is an addition to the existing house, it is important to make sure the addition does not look like an “add on”. Floors, walls, etc. must match up with the existing structure. There is no excuse for the floor to be even ¼ inch lower or higher than the existing floor. New walls mus be feathered into the existing walls utilizing the same texture. Remodels done well will allow you to recoup the cost of the remodel when you decide to sell. However, If this project is intended to make you money when you sell, consider carefully the changes you you make as some of your personal preferences may not transfer over to the buyer as worth the money you are trying to recoup.
